My name is Michael McDermott although I am usually referred to as “Mac”. I have now been in the music industry for over fifty years having worked as a Composer: Arranger: Conductor: Lecturer: Teacher and Instrumentalist. My musical career

In 1972 I decided to join The Band of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines where I trained as a Piano & Trumpet player. Clearly, this was a life changing decision as I stayed with The Royal Marines for the next 34 years.
It was during this period with The Royal Marines that I was exposed to and performed with a whole myriad of various musical genres and combinations, from Solo Piano to Full Symphony Orchestra and everything in between from Small Jazz Combos and Big Band to Piano Quintets and Chamber Orchestra.

Since leaving The Royal Marines in 2006, I have been constantly engaged to compose or arrange commissioned works for many professional organisations. These include: BBC Television: Classic FM Radio: The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra: The Halle Orchestra and of course The Royal Marines. Some of my more notable roles and achievements are listed below:

Ten years as the Musical Director of the world famous Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo.

In May 2019 was commissioned by The BBC to act as Musical Director for The 75th Anniversary of The D-Day Landings celebrations/commemorations and International artistes such as Sheridan Smith and Sir Willard White performed with a for full Symphony Orchestra and Choir. I provided all the original compositions and arrangements for the 90minute show which was broadcast live to an estimated viewing audience of 50 million.

I am currently musical director for a community choir in Shropshire and still receive commissions from The Royal Marines

I live with my wife , Beverley and we have a son, James.
